My Account of the Race.
Fredericksburg, VA May 17, 2009 6:55 a.m. I am listening to the National Anthem while standing in the crowd of runners ready to run the 13.1 miles. The excitement was high among us and everyone was anxious to get going. Finally at 7 a.m. we heard the starting shot of the musket and off we went. It was a nice cool day, a perfect temperature for this event. The spectators were cheering us on and performing groups kept us entertained all along the way. My spirit was high despite the fact that it started to rain half way through the race. I enjoyed every minute of it, until I came to the final 3 mile stretch. We all had to battle a few steep hills. I was determent not to stop running, well that was the grueling part of the race. Finally I reached the last mile marker. A new boost of energy kicked in and I increased my speed. I knew I was close to my desired time for this race. In training I ran the 13 miles in about 2 hours and 25 minutes. My goal for this race was to run the 13.1 under 2 hours and 15 minutes. I kept going with a faster pace, despite the fact that my body was getting very dehydrated. Finally I saw the finish line. I don’t know where I got the last bit of energy, but I started sprinting the last 100 feet and crossed the finish line in 2 hours, 13 minutes and 45 seconds. I DID IT!!
The opportunity to run in the Fredericksburg Historic Half marathon was presented and I made the decision to participate. I never ran a marathon before, but I love challenges. Since I started my jogging routine over a year ago, I felt in pretty confident that I was in good shape to take this endeavor on. On my first day of training I took the whole loop around our subdivision, which was about 6 miles. My lower back was bothering me, but after a got a good adjustment form my chiropractor, got some rest and the right pair of running shoes, I was ready to take on the next challenge, increasing the mileages by 1 to 2 miles every time until I finally reached my 13 mile mark. I made the 13.1 miles in fewer than 2 and a half hours. I was proud of myself. While I was running I was listening to Napoleon Hill’s classic “Think and Grow Rich”, which I highly recommend to everyone who wants to know the secret of success.This way I was achieving two things at the same time. I was training my physical body while expanding my mind. This Sunday is the big day. I will be one of 9000 runners who are starting out at 7 AM. My goal is to reach the finish line, so I can say: “In my life time I ran a half marathon!” Wish me luck!!!
